Cancer Support Services (Awhi Maroha)
Tāmaki Healthcare provides a cancer support service for all Maori patients and their whanau living within the Auckland District Health Board area. The service provides assistance and support to those diagnosed with cancer (and are currently receiving treatment or undergoing screening tests), or have symptoms suggesting that they may have cancer.
The service comprises of two community workers and a registered nurse who are available to take referrals and assess as to what supports or coordination may be required to assist its clients in their care.
Services offered, or that can be coordinated by this service, include:
• Assisting clients and their whanau/family with understanding the health system
• Assisting clients and their whanau/family with understanding cancer and its treatments
• Communication with doctors and specialists
• Transportation to and support at specialist appointments
• Group education and support sessions offered to clients and their whanau/family
